Cal State Bakersfield Women’s Basketball started their preseason on Nov. 3 with a 42-66 loss against Utah Valley. Coming into this season with new assistant coaches Erika Warren, Ray Alvarado, and Malika Glover, as well as returning coaches Ari Wideman and Me’a Hafoka-Latu, in addition to a couple of transfers. The Roadrunners are better positioned to compete for their upcoming season. Once tip-off time started, the fans, coaches, and players were ready to watch some hoops.
The first half was a close battle between the `Runners and Wolverines. Utah Valley was aggressive, as they were trying to initiate turnovers. Bakersfield kept their composure by grabbing rebounds, keeping the drive alive, and getting defensive stops. Once the second quarter ended, the score was CSUB 23-32 UV.
During halftime, a current CSUB student stepped into the 15 second halfcourt shot challenge for the opportunity of $10,000. The student did not complete the shot on time. However, he did not leave empty handed as he received a gift card for his efforts, as the next event transitioned to chicken one vs chicken two. Two students dressed in chicken costumes had to go make a layup from front court to backcourt. It was a grueling duel, but Chicken 1 came out on top and received a gift card.
As the second half was about to begin, both teams came out and were warming up their shots but were eagered to get the ball rolling in the basketball court. In the third quarter, the Wolverines increased their defensive pressure and were able to make turnover points, as well as three pointers. CSUB was unable to keep up with UV’s relentless energy but still managed to continue attacking the paint and passing for good shooting opportunities.
Although this was the `Runner’s first loss of the season, they will learn and adjust their playstyle throughout the season.
