The Michigan Wolverines and Connecticut Huskies faced off at Lucas Oil Stadium for the National Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana. Michigan won the National Championship 69-63, giving the school its second national championship.
In the first half, UConn hung in there with the Wolverines, having a 3-point lead with 10:23 left in the first half. Michigan was 0-8 from the 3-point line, and this was the story throughout the game. The Wolverines did have twice as many free throws as UConn, which helped them with offensive production. They had the lead at halftime, 33-29.
The story was different in the second half as Michigan went on a run of its own. They had a 13-point lead, which was the largest in the second half.
UConn struggled in this game, and even the simple things seemed difficult. Struggling to shoot from the field was due to the size of Michigan, and all the shots were contested. The Huskies had their worst shooting performance (30.9 percent) all season.
All of UConn’s struggles made it difficult for them to get the lead. Towards the end of the second half, they got close, but once the game gets to fouling for free throws, it’s usually over. Alex Karaban led the team in points and minutes (17 points/ 40 minutes).
Once the game was over, the score read 69-63, and Elliot Cadeau won the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
That also unfortunately means that the greatest tournament in college sports has come to a conclusion. The drama and thrill of March Madness is something that can never be replicated because it is teams fighting for just another game with their teammates.
In the words of Bill Raftery, this tournament is “ONIONS!”
