Cal State Bakersfield track athlete Makiah Parker broke the school record in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark.
Parker ran a 11.21 which was enough to break the record and gave her 17th place in the race.
“Breaking a school record is such an exhilarating moment. It’s a reflection of all your hard work and dedication and the continuation to break boundaries and limits,” said Parker.
Parker broke her previous record from last year where she ran a 11.52 100-meter dash which broke Andralette Gill’s record from 1983.
“If I remember correctly, I broke the 100m record with a time of 11.56. I remember crying with Coach Josh [Biagtan] in disbelief that I did it. Breaking a school record that stood up for more than 40 years is such an honor,” said Parker.
This season Parker got first in a total 10 races spanning four events. She competed this season in the 60, 100, 200, and the 4×100 relay.
“If I could grade my overall season I could give it an A plus. I exceeded many and others’ expectations this season,” reflects Parker. “After going through back surgery during the winter break and missing a complete 2 months’ worth of training I was skeptical about my abilities and how far I would go this season. But I stayed faithful and positive throughout the journey,”
Parker is now heading into her third year at CSUB and she isn’t planning on stopping now.
“I approach my junior year here with the CSUB Track and Field program there’s no doubt I won’t continue to break my own records. I have such a great and strong support system and coaches that genuinely believe in me.”
