The Runners closed out a 3-0 shutout of the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs tonight, paving their way into the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
Tournament Semifinals. Junior outside hitter Kelsee Sawyer led the Runners in kills with 12, and Luiza Martins accounted for 38 assists.
“I can’t set without a pass,” Martins said. “I think tonight we had good passing.”
The Runners won the first set 25-8 by taking advantage of the Broncs’ weak defense and flexing their own potent offense. The Broncs put up a fight in the second and third sets, scoring 16 and 18 points respectively.
“From my perspective, it was the best game we played all season,” said Head Coach Giovana Melo. “They came out pretty strong and ready to play.”
The Runners basically owned the Broncs this season. Of the Runners’ three wins, two were shutouts.
The Runners will take on the New Mexico State Aggies tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.
