Downtown Bakersfield – According to the Bakersfield Police Department, at about 4:20 A.M. the hostage situation concluded after an officer-related shooting involving the FBI. All of the hostages were found to be unharmed and received medical attention.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement was able to identify the suspect as Anthony Scott Searles-Harris.
According to FBI Sacramento Agent Sid Patel, Harris served in the US Army but was discharged due to going absent without leave. In 2014, he was charged with sex acts with a minor and became a registered sex offender.
Patel also added that Harris chose the Chase Bank building in order to get federal attention.
The standoff began Tuesday at 1 P.M. after the BPD were notified of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank near Chester Ave.
BPD described the subject as a male and was holding people hostage inside the building.
According to the FBI there were 10 hostages and five of them were tied.
Both the FBI and the BPD were outside of the Chase Bank for hours trying to negotiate with the suspect. “Discussions and exchanges related to food and water… There was also some elements related to his previous court case and in terms of materials he wanted to see,” said BPD Assistant Chief Jeremy Blakemore.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
