According to an update from Instructure’s status website canvas is now available for most users.
This is a developing story.
Canvas users across the nation, including at Cal State Bakersfield were heavily impacted by a global cyberattack causing a system outage.
In an email sent by CSUB Information Technology Services said CSU campuses had temporarily blocked access to Canvas “out of an abundance of caution.” The email also states access would be restored once the system is determined to be secure.
Earlier today, May 7, the site displayed a message from the hacking group called ShinyHunters. The group threatened to release private information to the public unless schools would reach out to negotiate.
Following that the Canvas site entered maintenance mode not allowing students to get in. The Canvas mobile app also showed error messages to users nationwide.
CSUB ITS said the university is working with CSU officials and cybersecurity experts to investigate and develop ways to complete coursework if the outage continues. Faculty were encouraged to communicate to students via CSUB email and students were advised to monitor their emails for updates and instructions.
