Hey Runners
[Sophie]: Hey Runners, it’s Sophie
[Jay]: and Jay.
Today we’re going to be talking about Piss In The Wind by Joji.
Dropped exactly two months ago and after a five year wait, how do we feel?
I really liked the album.
I thought it was really good too.
I kind of missed an album like this.
And I missed an album different from other stuff.
Because I feel like in comparison to the stuff that’s recently dropped, it’s different.
Yeah, Joji’s sound is definitely his own.
Like he has his own particular sound.
And for me, I kind of crave that sound now.
So yeah, like you’re saying, I’ll be fiending for a new Joji song.
So when Pixelated Kisses came out, I didn’t know it was for the album.
I thought it was a single.
And then, I don’t know where I saw that I was like, wait, I think he’s leading up to an album.
And I was like, oh, this single is actually pretty cool.
It was super distorted and I’m super into effects.
So it was cool to hear the distortion and the different effects.
And his voice still sounded kind of natural.
I like more of the alternative style music, you know?
So that’s why Pixelated Kisses really appealed to me because of that.
Because I was like, oh damn, this sounds different, you know?
It didn’t sound like the same kind of flowy, kind of melancholy stuff that he normally…
Off of Smithereens, because that was what I had last listened to.
So I was like, oh, this is different than what I’m used to hearing from him.
But it was still a good intro into the album.
Yeah, it definitely has a unique sound compared to Smithereens.
Because I think Smithereens was described as more like ballads.
Which I think is more like acoustic, like instrumental style with the singing.
And this style seems more like you were saying, like alternative.
With kind of like an electric feel to it.
Like it’s not really poppy, like it’s not pop, but it’s not rock.
So it’s kind of like the weird alternative pop.
It’s like right in between, yeah.
Like pop rock.
But he keeps that same energy of like that sad boy.
Yeah, exactly.
It’s the same kind of vibe, same kind of like mentality throughout the whole thing.
Of like, oh, so sad.
Yeah, yeah.
But honestly, I like the sad boy.
The sadder boy vibe.
Yeah, I kind of mess with it too.
It’s like, it’s very fitting for the time that it was dropped.
It was dropped like in February.
So I feel like it was very perfect for that time.
Kind of exactly what you want to hear.
Like coming out of winter, you know.
Kind of like lingering with the cold feeling.
Right, right.
And I know that he started leading up to it like early on, like in October of last year.
Yeah, I don’t really pay attention to like artist promo.
But there are certain artists that when they release the album, like I have to give it a run through, like just hear it one time.
So like I didn’t really pay attention to like when it was dropping or like any sort of like promo for it.
Like I think I saw a promo Genius video.
Yeah, the doppelganger that was funny.
But other than that, like when Pixelated Kiss came out, I heard that.
And then I would just hear like the singles as they would come out.
Because he released a lot of singles.
He released five of them.
I didn’t realize that.
Yeah.
And then they would have videos and visualizers.
All of those five had videos, huh?
Yeah.
And not just videos, like visualizers that are like 360 visualizers.
Yeah, I had seen that.
They were kind of cool.
I didn’t know what it was like until I started reading the comments.
And then the comments were like, oh, you can move your phone around like if anyone doesn’t know.
Or people comment like, I didn’t know you can move your phone and then all of a sudden like I turn my head and the screen moved.
And then I realized that it’s like VR.
Oh my God.
I didn’t know that either.
Yeah.
So that’s what the 360 means.
Yeah.
So if you’re moving your phone, like the eyes capture like the phone.
Like it’s the same type of VR style where it’s like you’re looking around in the scene.
Yeah.
But really like you’re just moving your phone.
You’re just moving the phone.
That’s kind of cool.
I didn’t realize that.
Yeah.
I had never seen another artist do that.
Do something like that.
Yeah.
Because sometimes visualizers are so boring or like they just have the lyrics.
But that’s like interactive.
Yeah.
And then with Joji, like I always see visualizers for his albums.
Like it’ll just be like a blurry weird like nightclub shot or something.
Or like weird glass just floating or something like random like with colors.
But no, this one was like he was in space or something.
And it was like a spaceship going through different like dimensions.
It was sick.
It was super sick.
That’s so cool.
Yeah.
I like how he did the rollout like for the singles.
I feel like there was more of a rollout for that, like more promo for this one than like when last time for Smithereens.
Because that’s the only one that I’ve kind of been around for.
But I feel like there was more promo for this one.
And maybe that has to do with the fact that he’s like under his own label now.
So he’s able to.
Might have more control over it.
Over what he does.
But I thought that was pretty cool.
It felt very creative to do something like that.
Yeah.
I like the visualizer.
The singles was cool.
There was something else.
Oh, the promo.
So one of the promos was like this clank off.
Yeah.
It was like robots fighting.
And I was showing you earlier.
Yeah, you were telling me about those.
I had never seen that before.
Like the clank off.
Yeah.
UFB.
It was called like United like Federation of Boxing or Robot Boxing.
I don’t know.
First of all, I didn’t even know Robot Boxing existed.
Yeah, me neither.
But then add in New Joji album in the background, that’s kind of cool too.
Yeah.
And then the album playing like while the robots are fighting.
Exactly.
And like none of them have any correlation with actual boxing or anything.
And the songs aren’t even like party songs.
Exactly.
They’re chill songs.
Yeah, they don’t fit the vibe.
But that was pretty cool.
Like how are you listening to Tarmac?
Yeah, it was an hour long live stream.
That’s so funny.
Yeah, because it’s like 45 minutes.
So it’s kind of long.
Yeah.
Longer than Smithereens, I think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You could definitely tell.
I think he put more work into this one than Smithereens.
Production wise though, what’s the album with Modus on it?
I have no idea.
Let’s see if I can find it.
Oh, is that the name of the album?
Is it?
Oh, Nectar.
Oh, oh.
So Nectar.
It reminds me of Nectar a little bit.
Like songs like Give Me Love.
They kind of sound like Love Me Better.
And then the production.
I really like the production on Nectar.
Like all the different sounds.
Like his voice.
Yeah, it sounded like clean, but not too auto-tuney.
But still has a fun vibe to it.
Yeah.
And it still has that alternative kind of feel that you know from Doji still.
Which is kind of cool.
Yeah.
He just has like a…
I like his voice.
It sounds natural and vulnerable.
Like you could hear cracks in it or something.
Yeah.
It’ll almost sound like you could hear the pain.
That’s such a good way to describe it.
I feel like he does it on purpose.
But it’s like a vibe, you know.
Like you could hear that pain.
It suits a lot of the songs really well.
Like, which one was it?
Like Last of a Dying Breed.
I feel like in that kind of song you can really feel the ache.
The ache that he adds to it.
It’s cool because it’ll be a sad song where his voice is more mellow.
But then the beat will be like…
Yeah.
Exactly.
And then he’ll come in like…
Yeah.
I liked Pixelated Kisses for that reason.
Because it went so hard at some point.
So then it would just soften out and kind of slow down a little bit.
And then go crazy again.
Yeah.
So it’s like you somehow get both of this sad singing your heart out in the car song.
But then also like fast beats where it’s like…
Exactly.
Like you could dance to it a little bit.
Exactly.
So it’s just like…
I don’t know how he can fuse that.
How he fuses that.
But he does it so well too.
There’s like a…
It doesn’t even feel like it’s such a harsh line that he has to cross.
It feels like he’s…
I don’t know what that means in production way.
But it feels really smooth.
Like a smooth transition, you know.
Yeah.
It could be…
Because I’m not sure how his production be.
But I feel like when someone knows how to mix their own stuff, like produce their own stuff.
And they have more control.
I feel like they get more comfortable with their voice.
Like how it sounds.
And being able to have like a natural sounding voice.
Like very minimal.
Not too much going on.
Like I don’t know.
I feel like he’s…
He’s already got his like sound down.
Like he knows what he wants to sound like.
The fans like expect that sound.
And then I feel like his music chops.
Like he already knows like what melodies he wants to go with.
Like…
Because some of the songs do sound similar.
Like they almost have the same key.
Or like the same melody almost.
Yeah.
As like other songs.
So I feel like he kind of already found like his groove.
Like these are the melodies I like to use.
Like these are the chord progressions I like.
Like these are the keys that I like to work in.
So now it’s just a matter of like…
Alright, let me just put out some fun stuff that I like.
Or stuff that…
Because I think I heard him say in an interview.
Like when he does stuff for Joji, he tries to think of like what’s not out right now.
Like what sound do I crave that I don’t hear anywhere else.
And I think like that’s literally…
I see it.
Like I hear it.
That’s the best way to describe it.
Yeah, because that’s the best way to describe it.
Like I don’t hear it anywhere else.
And it’s just something that you kind of like yearn for.
And no one else is doing it.
So yeah.
I was thinking about that too.
It’s like I don’t even know what kind of genre you’d like to categorize him in.
But like you can’t even.
Because it’s just something original on its own.
And I like the way you said that.
Like he’s already created a sound that he likes.
And that he knows that the fans like.
Because like you can tell.
It’s something that he’s been able to continue throughout a couple of his albums now.
Yeah.
I mean as far as like criticism.
The only criticism I’ve heard from people saying that like he’s sticking to the same sound.
And I don’t like it.
Like he’s not exploring.
It’s people that are like music critics.
Like YouTube music critics.
And I feel like it’s just something to pick at.
Because it’s kind of like do you even want to him to have a different sound?
Would I have been upset maybe if I listened to it?
I’m like this ain’t Joji.
If all of a sudden I’m hearing an acoustic album or something.
Like I don’t know.
That would have thrown me off.
Yeah.
Because the fans go in expecting to hear what they already know.
You know and this kind of while it does like keep the same sound and stuff.
I do think that he like some of these songs sound a little more R&B. And I kind of liked it.
I didn’t really like it.
Yeah.
But it was.
Like the can’t see in this club or something.
Yeah.
Exactly.
I like that one too.
It’s so damn good.
The one with Gideon.
I like that one too.
Oh yeah.
So good.
I recently got put on Gideon by one of my friends.
Yeah.
No I like Gideon.
He has like that deep.
That dark voice.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I like that one.
The features on it.
There’s only four features on this.
Yeah.
Like for 22 songs.
I wasn’t really expecting that.
Like I expected more.
So like ranking the features.
Like who do you think.
Because I think the best feature was probably Don Tolliver.
I was going to say the same thing.
Yeah.
And I don’t even really like his voice.
Really.
Yeah.
Like his voice kind of grew on me.
Uh huh.
Because normally I wouldn’t really listen to it.
But lately like his last album.
Oh the last album was so good.
And then the feature.
Yeah.
I was kind of like you know what.
Yeah.
That’s really what I wrote down.
Because like they both.
Don Tolliver released like the week before Joji did.
So it was like already nice to have them kind of fresh.
And then they featured on each others.
Yes.
Exactly.
And that’s why I was like that’s really good.
Because it’s like.
Yeah.
And it’s like.
Isn’t the lyrics literally like give me pieces of you.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Like all I need is some pieces of you.
And it’s like.
I don’t know.
It sounds like all I need is your feature.
And then we’ll trade features.
Yeah.
I don’t know.
Yeah.
And then the like four bats.
I never heard.
Like I don’t even know who that is.
But I like their voice.
Me too.
I like that song.
That song is good.
I can’t tell if it’s a girl or a guy.
But it’s a good voice.
It’s a good one.
Whatever it is.
It’s a nice soprano.
It’s cool.
And then the Yeet one.
I feel like.
I like Yeet.
But I feel like he phoned it in.
And he was just like.
And I feel like Yeet.
That’s his thing now.
Is like let me just collect my bag and phone it in.
Yeah.
Because I’m like.
I can’t understand what he’s saying.
He just talks about being drunk or something.
And then the ending.
He’s just like.
Basically yeah.
I don’t know Yeet either.
But.
Yeah.
I liked the song.
I liked Rose Colored.
But.
Yeah.
Like I like Joji’s part.
Yeah.
But then when Yeet comes out.
It’s like.
Because it’s like.
What is happening.
Oh man.
It’s like.
Yeah.
It kills the whole vibe.
It was going so good.
And like the beginning part.
It’s like.
I do like the actual Rose Colored.
Yeah.
And then Yeet comes on.
It’s like.
What is happening right now.
Because that song is so catchy.
But then.
Yeah.
Like he comes in.
And he kind of starts like.
Yeah.
Going at it.
And.
Yeah.
He’s like.
I’ve been living through Rose Colored lenses.
Yeah.
And that’s.
That part is so good.
There’s so many songs on this album.
That I’m like.
Oh yeah.
It gets stuck in your head.
I could have that stuck in my head for a long time.
Yeah.
Like Cigarettes did not leave my mind.
Since.
That song grew on me.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
At first.
I was like.
It’s kind of boring.
I’m just going to skip it for now.
Like.
Some of them are a little.
Like.
It just has a repetitive melody.
Yeah.
Like.
Forehead touch the ground.
Yeah.
And then it’s so like.
Slow.
Like.
Simple.
Like.
Not too many vocals.
Yeah.
Going on.
Like.
Not too many instruments.
It’s just like.
A very slow.
Paced song.
And it’s like.
Such contrast to things like.
Yeah.
Like.
I don’t know.
And then.
Like.
I don’t even know how to say that one.
Sojourn?
I don’t either.
I don’t know how to say it.
I like that one.
Sojourn.
I like that one a lot too.
I thought that one was a really good one.
But I don’t know what that means.
I don’t either.
Maybe we should Google that.
We should Google it just in case.
But yeah.
I like how you said that.
Like.
Cigarettes.
Being right after.
Pixelated kisses.
It was such a.
Yeah.
It’s like.
Like.
A jump.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It’s like.
You’re in it.
And then you go to cigarette.
And it’s just like.
A repetitive.
Like.
Single.
Kind of thing.
It just.
Feels like.
Yeah.
Continuous.
It almost feels like an interlude.
Yes.
Exactly.
Like it wasn’t even an actual song.
Yeah.
It was kind of like an interlude.
But it was so good.
It was so catchy.
I loved it.
A sojourn is a temporary stay.
Visit.
Or brief residence in a place that is not one’s home.
Alright.
So kind of visiting.
Sounds okay.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That.
That makes a lot of sense.
Because looking at the lyrics now.
It’s like.
Like.
Great.
How does that one go again?
It’s.
I can’t remember how it actually goes.
But I know the lyrics.
It says like.
We’ll find each other later.
And we’ll see through it together.
You know.
Oh.
Yeah.
And.
So that.
Oh.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That makes a lot of sense now that you say.
It’s like a brief visit.
I did like that part.
Yeah.
I did like that part.
When you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I wasn’t.
Like the themes in this album.
It was a little hard to tell at first.
Because.
Like on the first run through.
You can’t really.
Focus on the lyrics much.
And.
In some of the songs.
There’s like.
Maybe two verses.
At most.
But.
Like.
I feel like.
This was one that you had to just listen.
Each.
Like.
Do a full run through each time.
For something different.
Where there was like.
First run be lyrics.
Next run be like actual music.
Is that the one that’s like.
Has this cool effect.
Where it’s like.
I think so.
Yeah.
It’s like.
Where it jumps back and forth.
Yeah.
Where it’s like.
Do do do do.
Do do do do.
It sounds so weird.
That’s so cool.
Yeah.
That one’s cool.
Towering kind of thing.
Yeah.
I was going to say something about Sojourn.
And I totally forgot.
What I was going to say.
I don’t know.
But yeah.
Anyway.
Yeah.
I think.
That.
Some of the.
Like.
I’m.
Like the first.
Like idea that came to mind.
When I listened to this.
Was like.
Like an album.
Of like.
Him just reminiscing on the past.
And like.
After you showed me.
Some of these music videos.
I feel like.
Yeah.
Kind of makes a lot of sense.
Of like.
Okay.
Like.
There’s so many similarities.
Like the video.
For the.
What is it the.
It only gets better.
Yeah.
That looks kind of like.
Yeah.
Right.
Exactly.
Like the same style.
And then like.
I don’t know.
Just like the.
Some of the songs.
Sound like older songs.
And then like.
He’s bringing stuff back.
That maybe he liked.
And he just wants to like.
Bring it back again.
Because I like this so much.
That’s so cool.
Like the.
Some of the videos are so wild.
To like.
Yeah.
With the one.
With the jet coming in.
And then like.
The clowns are chasing him.
Yeah.
And then there’s a cat.
With shooting laser beams.
You didn’t see that one?
No.
I haven’t watched any of them.
Yeah.
You got to watch the videos.
Like.
They’re so creative.
Some of it’s like.
How does he even come up with this stuff?
Like.
What is in this guy’s head?
Like.
When you do watch them.
They make so much sense.
Like.
When you listen to the music.
It’s just like.
Oh yeah.
This came from the same mind.
Like.
It makes a lot of sense.
With the video.
I feel like sometimes.
He literally like.
Makes the video.
Have weird stuff.
So that he can add more sound effects.
Do you think so?
Yeah.
Because if you’re listening to the music video.
There’ll be like.
Random little sounds.
Like.
Explosions.
Or like.
A microwave going off.
Like.
And it’s like.
That’s only in the video.
Yeah.
It’s just like.
Originality to the video.
Instead.
Because it’s almost like.
A beat drop.
And then it’s like.
That’s how a beat drops.
With an explosion.
That’s really cool.
But that’s because of the video.
But if you’re just listening.
It still sounds cool.
Yeah.
You just don’t get that same kind of.
You don’t get the visual.
Yeah.
Exactly.
The visual.
But the still.
The sound effect is like.
What am I hearing?
Like.
I’m hearing lasers.
I’m hearing like.
Explosions.
Like.
What is happening right now?
And then the song’s still going.
Yeah.
And it’s really like.
With some of these.
I mean.
Obviously.
With some of the songs.
It’s like.
Oh.
Well.
Yeah.
Like.
Random noises.
Makes sense.
Or you know.
Like the.
Like you mentioned.
With the towering effect of.
Yeah.
Like the.
Yeah.
It was like a cascading effect.
Yes.
Of like the autotune.
Yeah.
Yes.
Exactly.
I think that works.
It works really well.
And I think that’s really cool.
I wanted to ask you.
Because I had seen.
I think when I saw.
That he was doing like.
Promo for the whole album.
That was when I first saw.
I was like.
Because I watched.
The genius video.
Yeah.
That doesn’t look like.
How I remember him.
And then.
I think he mentions it.
In that video too.
Where.
They’re like.
Well.
Hey.
Like.
What’s up with.
Who are you?
Who are you?
And he goes.
I don’t know.
I just thought it was.
Like fun.
What is that?
What does that mean?
But I think it was kind of.
Like.
He just got like.
He just got tired of.
Having the promo.
Everything.
Yeah.
And I’m like.
Low key.
Like I could understand that.
But I also think that.
It kind of makes sense.
Like if you.
Like if you really look into it.
It could tie into the album.
Pretty well.
How so?
I think.
Well.
Obviously he’s like.
Reminiscing in the past.
So maybe he’s just like.
I’m like.
I’m busy.
Like recapping.
What’s happened.
You know.
Somebody else go.
I don’t know.
Because like.
I think it’s on brand.
For him.
It is.
Like to do something weird.
And out of pocket.
But then.
Like you’re saying.
And it also makes sense.
Because it’s like.
He’s tired of promo.
He’s busy.
He’s about to go on tour.
He’s working on stuff.
So it’s like.
I don’t have time to do this.
And he’s always been like.
Such a private person too.
Yeah.
To where he’s like.
Like.
I mean.
He.
I think he.
Dropped off of like.
Social media for like.
Two years.
And then he came back.
And posted.
And he was like.
Like dancing on him, but it only gets better.
It only gets better and I thought it was like a Like not the real video.
Yeah, like I thought I was like a fan made a video or something cuz I was like thing Yeah, cuz I was like this doesn’t go with anything else.
Yeah, I was like, I don’t know Maybe he’s doing a funny bit, but then the actual video came out on YouTube and it was like, oh that is the video Yeah, it’s like oh, okay and then that’s the thing too like I feel like I didn’t notice cuz I know I didn’t like I Watch like one or two videos and I think like I don’t know.
I just like I didn’t think of it I mean, we haven’t seen him for two years.
Yeah, I was like his jaw got bigger No, but then like I see the genius one and that’s when I was like, okay Nah, no, that’s because it’s like on him like the whole time.
There’s no like clips or anything moving.
That’s like I have the music video.
Yeah hard to determine but then like you really look at it and say like no, that’s not him That’s when I figured it out.
And I was like, okay, he’s doing a he’s doing some he’s doing something or something I thought that was really cool.
I mmm Don’t know actually I think it was because like I had heard I had heard rumors right looking looking back Afterwards because that was when I had first seen everything and people were like I thought he died like he was gone for two Two years and then that’s also part of the funny joke because everyone always has like that conspiracy theory of like, oh, he’s dead I mean him.
Yeah That was the funny joke.
It’s like oh Joji’s dead.
They cloned him Yeah, like the Jim Carrey thing Like you pull the Jim Carrey.
Yeah, but it was actually funny because he planned it and it’s just yeah joke.
It’s not creepy Yeah, like I remember I had seen one of his because I was looking back earlier at like his Instagram post and I think he Literally said in like the caption of what I’m like, sorry for the doppelganger.
I was like fully just yeah Yeah, I think maybe he didn’t think it was gonna be such a big deal.
Yeah Sorry about the doppelganger.
I just thought it was hilarious.
Thank you for listening Yeah See, and I feel like that’s like perfect promo.
Yeah, exactly Yeah, you get people talking about it it draws attention people start asking why and then it’s like Funny out-of-pocket but not like oh, you’re gonna get canceled But it’s like funny enough and like tame enough still and it’s it’s like you said, it’s very on brand for him Yeah, exactly.
And as yeah, it’s just like him to do something.
Yeah like that I thought it just it just made sense and then like if you that’s why I said if you really looked into it like you could tie it into the lore of the Album or whatever or to the the themes, but I think I think overall I think it was literally just just a joke that he just genuinely didn’t want to do promo or anything But it was funny because it seemed like from what the the guy that was playing him said like it was all fully scripted So he like yeah, I need to do the interview.
He just genuinely thought it was a head of all this.
Yeah I thought that was cool.
I was just looking at the global charts Oh, I guess Hotel, California is the one that peaked that makes a lot of sense at 127.
Yeah, I don’t know why I mean I like that song.
Yeah, I think it’s a name.
Honestly it 100% I was gonna say it’s probably just a name and Honestly going into that song.
I fully thought he was just gonna sample it.
I was like, yeah.
Yeah sample the original go for it Yeah, and I remember I was talking I think Oswald about it and he’s like, I don’t know why he named it that he doesn’t Even like allude to Hotel, California Yeah, and it’s like bro.
It’s his own song like he doesn’t have to Yeah, it’s just the same name.
But I yeah, I didn’t realize that that was that wasn’t a single was it right?
That’s what I’m saying.
Yeah, it has to be the name Which is like maybe that’s a strategy Probably because I know that that was like one of the three songs that he had like I keep posted like something on his Instagram Like to give a sneak peek to like fans at like a little snippet, you know But it was like something that was locked behind like a password that you had to get like an email for Yeah, and and so I know that that was one of the requests like permission.
Yeah, something like that You know how like Instagram has that feature?
Yeah, so I was like, that’s weird.
Oh, yeah, they have a premium one Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, so I was like, oh, okay, I guess so but I I know that that was one of the sampled ones.
I Also from what I heard he sent a floppy disks of this To fans.
Yeah, which yeah, he’s he has to have like a like a whole fan club That’s like underground low-key cuz like how do the people know about the clank off like they had a whole audience Yeah, was that like the boxing it was like the idea first and then he like yeah, I don’t know I have no idea.
It was so cool.
It was in LA.
Like it was hosted in LA Which makes a lot of sense, but I’m number two is last of a dying breed.
So that was a single Okay, that was number that was 190 on global Spotify Okay, and then pixelated kisses, which doesn’t make sense because I was first single and it’s number 196 196 it’s kind of I feel like in his past albums There’s always been like a song that’s like like one of the singles that has blown up but I feel like in this one there wasn’t there wasn’t really like Yeah, that’s true out there, you know, like if there was one to blow up Why Hotel California?
Yeah, and last of a dying breed kind of makes sense because of the video trim and the single And then pixelated kiss to the first one.
Yeah, and then love you less How does that one even go?
Cuz like I know I mean obviously glimpse of us Was the best one off or not the best one, but like the yeah, I hit the hardest off with smithereens But so like ranking wise for the album with other Joji Albums, what do you rank this?
Well?
Man, I don’t really I don’t really know I’ve really liked smithereens just because I let I let that one like I let that would hit me really hard Yeah, so I really liked that one a lot and you’re saying that’s like your first that yeah That was my first that was my first one that I got into me.
That’s why to definitely put some ice Yeah, I know for sure.
I also like ballads one Yeah, I like that one.
Is that the one with like yeah, right with oh, yeah I’m dancing in the dark and everything.
Yeah, it’s like like yeah, that’s good.
Yeah, that’s the goaded one But I think if I had to rank my top three would be smithereens pixelated kisses.
I don’t think it’s a lady kisses This is piss in the wind piss in the wind and then then yeah ballads one Yeah, I think ballads number one for sure I actually like this one more than smithereens because The song wise like I like them the song is the same like amount Like there’s not one in smithereens that I like more than this in the wind and then vice versa.
Yeah, but there’s just more In there’s more to piss in the wind and smithereens is like I wanted more and there wasn’t enough Dang, like cuz I like do you con like yeah.
Yeah, I like a glimpse of us Knight Rider and I wrote so sick Yeah, yeah, like I think I only skip like one or two on smithereens and then this one I don’t I skip forehead touch the ground, but it’s not gonna like it.
It’s just cuz boring it very well Yeah, yeah, like if I’m in the car and that comes on like I’m bored Like yeah, because yeah, it’s like you said I almost feel like it doesn’t fit into that.
Yeah, it’s like an interlude Yeah, it should have been an intro or something.
Yeah.
Yeah, it’s like a skit.
That’s like at the end, you know Yeah, like outro or something.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I agree with that But I also think that piss in the wind is longer than smithereens, right?
Uh-huh.
Wait, wait, wait, I think so, you know what it probably is.
It’s that I get smithereens more Yeah, you probably do it’s 24 minutes No, it’s 24 minutes and then piss in the wind is 45 Wait, that’s what I’m saying.
But that’s what I just said piss in the wind is longer.
Yes.
That’s what I said Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.
I’m agreeing.
Okay, that’s what I’m saying that smithereens made me want more.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
Okay Okay, cuz like blah blah blah demo like is that even a song?
I don’t even listen to that and then like Like dissolve sounds so cool like the autotune on it and he doesn’t ever do songs that that autotune that autotuned Yep, so like I wanted a couple more like that and then like but I feel like he gave us that in and piss in the wind The with the autotune?
Well, no, I mean like he gave more in.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, that’s true Like yeah, so I mean, I guess maybe there’s a little bit different sound.
Yeah in smithereens So if you’re more into that sound I could see why it’s it’s very it’s like you said it’s it’s like more ballads and it feels Very specific.
Yeah, but like if I play this album like smithereens like it’s done 20 minutes, like true That’s like a single car, right?
And then if I skip two of them, like hello here But yeah that I really ran through four songs like in ten minutes And that’s the album but with like piss in the wind, you know There’s a little more play time like I could go back on a couple of them Like I always go back to certain ones and then I just love singing along like in the car These are very much like singing along songs.
I love singing Joji songs like along in the car I don’t know what it is about.
I feel like his music is just perfect for a car ride.
Yeah Like that.
Yeah, just like that sad car ride along.
Yeah, like windows down, you know and everything.
You want anyone to hear you sing?
So you put the windows up?
Yeah, like nah, it’s like I love singing along to this to this album and then Yeah, like with Joji songs.
I feel like they’re so chill to just have in the background.
Mm-hmm Like there’s nothing too crazy going on like the songs are mellow So like they’re chill to have in the background that you do stuff to him in the background That’s why I think he’s just such a good artist for everything because yeah I said you can put him in the car sing along you can like listen in the background while studying or something and then you Can have it in the background of like a party?
Yeah, and it’s not gonna get in the way, but then if you want to actually listen to it It’s just something to focus on.
Yeah, you can focus on the lyrics like there’s still deep lines Yeah, like you were saying the one about like let’s go find each other in another life and get back together Bro, the lyrics on this.
I was gonna say the lyrics on this one got deep.
I think yeah, and I like I liked it That’s good.
Yeah, he’s like Yeah, I guess he’s the new like yearner.
Yeah Before I feel like it was like sad boys.
Like yeah, yeah I agree sad boy, but now it’s not enough to just be sad like you gotta be sad and you know He’s yeah, exactly.
He’s sad yearning and missing like craving.
It’s so funny.
But also it’s really good.
I think the sound With of this album too mixed with those lyrics It’s just perfect cuz like on some of the songs where one could say he’s yearning more He has more like of an R&B kind of vibe.
You know, it’s kind of low and and Like melancholy a little bit It’s so damn hard Yes, that was a perfect example It’s so damn hard And I think I think it like it makes the most sense.
It’s it’s not like this Okay, well some of the songs are like where the music doesn’t match the lyrics, but yeah Yeah, like in this one, I feel like a majority of them too, but they somehow do.
Yeah, that’s what I’m saying I think majority of them do Yeah Yeah, yeah, and I feel he’s been doing that yeah, like he has a cool way of like being funny and still being real and sad and deep like It’s just like he has a lot of really good balance of both.
Yeah.
Yeah, it’s just like his personality is kind of shining Yeah, I feel like cuz I don’t know.
I feel like no one else couldn’t really do that No, like how he does it.
Yeah true because it’s like he said he’s able to be funny But he’s still able to give those like sad boy lyrics Yeah, it’s a hard balance for both cuz then sometimes it’s like I know he’s just like that’s the yearning music You know, it’s like funny like kind of vibes, but he’s able to mix and then it sounds good Yeah, like I feel like sometimes like people will try to sing some sass shit and it’s like it’s not really working for you Yeah, it’s not the, it’s not the best Yeah, he’s able to mix that very well to where it’s still enjoyable and relatable cuz some of them are like Oh, yeah this for sure.
Like I understand these lyrics, but others it’s like, oh, this is just fun Now I just have all these like now they’re popping in my head like I’m a running man, running man I love that and I think that the lyrics on that one too match it perfectly Yeah, because it’s like yes, like the, well the whole, he was almost rapping on that one Yeah, because the whole rest of that song is so like Consistent, you know, but the lyrics feel very like, I don’t know like it’s not tied to anything Yeah That was one of my, that was one of my favorites.
My favorites were Pixelated Kisses because I really liked the lyrics and like just the overall vibe of it because it felt a little more alternative and I kind Of messed with alternative music more and then Cigarette.
I thought that was I put that as an easy listen because it’s kind of repetitive So I kind of liked it like it was one of my my top three and then my last top three is Fragments But that’s because I really liked the Dawn Tolliver feature and it was catchy Yeah, is that, is that the vacation?
He’s like girl, you know, you’re my vacation I think so I just need some vacation Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes Cause Dawn Tolliver does stuff like that I mean obviously there’s autotune on it But yeah, like those little like Da da da da da da Yeah, the runs, yeah I think they’re really cool Which ones are your favorites?
My favorites?
Like Oh this is hard I like Tarmac That was a really good one I like rap so I feel like I like the ones that are kind of like Like you were saying like they have like that little bounce to them Like that rap type stuff Like Tarmac where it’s a little more like I don’t know like da da da da da Like you’ll be like spitting to it I like Strange Home I don’t know why No, that’s a valid one actually It’s the bass That’s what I liked about that one too because the bass was really hard Doom doom Doom, like super hard bass And then yeah, like that one hits I don’t know why, it makes you want to dance Like that bass, but it’s so weird It’s so weird because you literally be like Weird sad songs and then I’m like Why do I feel like dancing to it Like Strange Home We can work it out 30 million miles And then the bass like Doom doom doom But then the lyrics are like That’s what I’m saying You mean we can work it out?
Yeah, how does it sound hip hop, sad, boy, and alternative At the same time, and distorted And distorted, yes, exactly I was going to ask you about that Because Pixelate Kisses was the first one that came out And it sounds the craziest too It sounds like the most different From the others So when you heard that one and you’re like Oh this is what the album is going to be Were you like this is weird Like all this crazy noise and distortion Or were you like oh hells yeah No, I was messing with it heavily Because it was something that I like I like rock and I like alternative So to me that was like right on the mark And it still sounded like Joji too Because it was like the little slower parts too And I was like Oh yeah, this is exactly the kind of vibe Like you look at the album cover And you don’t expect that So I was like This is amazing I kind of expected the rest of the album to sound like that It’s kind of like The only one that sounds that heavy Yeah, I feel like he Led with that because it’s the most extreme So it’s like if people are on to this And it’s the most extreme one, then this other stuff Is like clean Because that one is the most distorted And the most wild sounding Which going back to what I was saying I feel like he’s really comfortable with his production And his techniques and stuff, like how he mixes Because I feel like it would take Somebody that actually Knows mixing or something To be able to describe that sound And how to work with that sound Of being distorted and having crazy sounds But not sounding broken Or weird Or just not clean Like you didn’t do it on purpose Distorted like you accidentally distorted it And it doesn’t sound like that It sounds like he knows what he’s doing It sounds purposeful Yeah, exactly I feel like when artists push sounds Push speakers to the limit Push the equipment to the limit Because I feel like we have so much technology now It’s fun to play with it And for people that don’t really make music Sometimes you don’t know Even what you can do with certain sounds And so it takes an artist Sometimes to explore with Weird runs in the autotune Or weird distortion Or weird synths or something Where it’s like you’ve never heard that before Or you’ve never experimented with production And so hearing a flanger Or hearing some cool autotune You’re like woah what did I just hear So I love when artists will explore With distortion and saturation Which I think is something Like you said, he’s able to nail it in Very well And make it sound purposeful And still Instead of making it sound weird It adds to the Actual overall sound Which I think is pretty good I enjoyed it, because I got hints of R&B I got hints of alternative Stuff in here, and then rap Like we mentioned So while he doesn’t have A specific genre, he kind of ties in A whole bunch Yeah, I mean Is he considered popular, like pop?
I guess, I don’t really know I feel like he has to be that at this point I don’t know what else he could fit in Yeah, that’s true He has to be pop at this point But this made me want to rap Joji album I’m ready for the Joji rap He kind of teased it a little bit I’m waiting for the Joji rap album I feel like eventually I feel like for him, anything That’s wild and Out of pocket, he’ll do it It’s not something out of his limit And then rap is so, I feel like If he can sing already, rapping must be nothing for him So easy I mean Cigarette, that song alone sounded And then he’s so I don’t know Random, out of pocket, I can see him pulling up Overdoing it Cutting a bust down chain that says Joji Like a grill And just like Rolexes Fully going into the role And then getting all the girls on him And then doing a whole rap album Oh yeah, I’m Joji the rapper now, this is my chain This is my grill I can see him doing that He would kind of eat it down, I fear That’s the next one That’s the next one, who do we have to Who do we have to talk to He just needs to collaborate with Don Toliver a little more And then we’ll get it Or maybe Yee Although I don’t know about his last name I don’t know how that influence would go Who would be the rap collab The Joji rap collab I don’t know It’d have to be somebody that Can still sing Yeah, can still sing in general That’s a good one, I don’t know Kanye Kanye, Joji Both of them would get cancelled Joji would get cancelled so fast I think he would get cancelled So fast I feel like if he were to get cancelled It would have happened already He’s uncancellable After Filthy Frank and Pink Guy He’s uncancellable Cause you can’t top that What is he going to do that’s worse Than he would be doing weird ass eating baby jokes In Filthy Frank He would be making fun of crippled people In Filthy Frank And then he finally acknowledged it That’s true, he accepted it What if he comes back As Filthy Frank And does a Filthy Frank rap album And it’s filthy Like some Too Short Too Short and Joji Up all night, what’s my favorite word I think it could work I can see that I can see the Too Short and Joji That’s the one I’m waiting on It would be good Then yeah, actually That’s something Because I feel like he’s already covered ballads I can sing, I know I can sing We know you can sing But now it’s more of like, what else can I do with this Either that Or I’d want to see him on a rock album Because I feel like he could have the voice To do some crazy screams Yeah, you’re right I remember singing in concert And it’s weird because This is sad music, how are you going to listen to it in concert But he would be in concert like What’s up Belgium Yeah It’s like, alright, this is the next song I’m a running man, running man 100% I think he could pull off a rock album Because of that I guess we’re going to have to see Where he goes Is he going to go screamo rock Or is he going to be rapping I don’t know Or is he just going to stay I don’t think he’s going to stay in his lane I feel like he milked this one already You think he’s taking everything he can from this type of music Yeah, I think with the doppelganger With the videos on how easily they’re coming out I feel like he’s like You know, I’ve milked it I’ve milked this sound as much as I could With the old songs coming back I feel like He’s done 4 albums And I feel like they all In general have the same kind of sound You were saying that this one was the first one under his own label Exactly So I feel like, why not play it safe Let me come out with my first one So I can get my bag Not even see how it’s going to go Because he knows how it’s going to go Because the sound is so familiar to everybody already If you like ballads, one If you like smithereens, if you like nectar Then you’re going to like this one But he’s definitely teasing something That’s what I’m saying And now that I have my bag, now I can really do the weird shit That I wanted to do I feel like, yeah I think you’re right And he’s a plotter He’s scheming for sure He’s a schemer for sure So yeah, he’s got something in the works For sure Hopefully he won’t disappear for another 5 years Nah, he probably will Sadly enough, yeah But you know what?
At least he’s not like a Frank Ocean That just leaves us hanging forever and ever Because I’m so sick of Channel Orange already Like I’ve heard it I’m not even that big of a Frank Ocean fan Right?
Not anymore In general, I couldn’t get on it Yeah, it’s hard to When you feel like the person That’s making the music doesn’t even want to make it It’s like, why do I want to listen to it It’s like, you don’t even care for this, why am I supposed to care for it Yeah He’s weird for that one But back to Joji At least When he goes on his hiatus, he delivers True, he’s gone for a reason And he comes back with something good And that’s how I know this guy’s musical This guy just has Music in his heart In his soul, because I feel like Even without trying, he could probably just make songs In his room, on YouTube or something That’s what I was going to say When I looked up what specific genre he is It classified him as bedroom pop And I’m like, yeah, I can see that Why didn’t you mention that before?
Bro, that literally looked perfect Bedroom pop, yeah It is bedroom pop, but when I think of bedroom pop I think of people like Clairo I don’t know who that is I don’t listen to bedroom pop, so I don’t know Like the Madias?
Yeah, I’ve heard of the Madias Who’s that one girl Maya or Mayo, something like that I’ve never heard of her, let me see I don’t Yeah, it’s Maya, isn’t it?
She’s Venezuelan Oh, like Midnight Trust, do you know Midnight Trust?
No Rick’s Orange County?
Rick’s Orange County?
I’m literally from Orange County I can’t, he’s probably not even from Orange County I’ve heard of Mac DeMarco That’s bedroom pop kind of stuff Oh, like some Mac Miller Sad Boy type stuff?
Like Circles?
Yeah, sure I don’t go with that I told you, I’m rap, I listen to rap It’s more like bedroom pop The way that Google classifies it Is like DIY Prediction, you know, very much Simplistic kind of Lo-fi kind of Billie Eilish’s early album Very much, very much You have homework now, you have to go listen to Clairo Clairo?
Oh, literally, I typed in Bedroom pop singer, and she’s the first person That popped up Clairo bedroom Oh, goodness I’ve heard of Omar Apollo Yes, oh I love him But I don’t actually listen to him You should See, this is why I crave Joji But he started like that With a certain artist You know what I mean?
He could do it and not be corny He was, he was You can’t forget his origins though What, Pink Guy?
Yeah The way He’s like bedroom pop in the way that He started on his own Yeah, I feel you Exactly, and that’s That’s why, if anything I would, like, I can see How he would be classified as bedroom pop That’s the only thing that I don’t really like To classify him as bedroom pop Because that’s more like Like flowy, like dreamy Kind of like lo-fi Like background noise kind of vibe Yeah, I was gonna say, I think that’s the main thing Is the lo-fi compared to the production And that’s not Joji anymore Because that’s not like a studio album It doesn’t sound like he made it in his room Which he does have songs that do sometimes sound like that And that’s why it’s like, okay, I can see why He would be classified as that He’s like, he’s on another level In bedroom pop, if anything Let me look up who an alternative Pop artist would be I feel like I’m gonna know A lot of the ones that you’re gonna pull up Billie Eilish Lana Del Rey Oh, I love Lorde Santigold See, I feel like, okay, Pink Panthers I feel like he’s not Pink Panthers Poppy And that’s what I was gonna say too, because if you look up, like, pop He’s classified as pop It’s too, it’s I might get cancelled for saying this But I feel like It’s become more like No It’s okay, it’s okay I’m okay, I’m okay I’ll keep my It’s become too mainstream?
Yes, in a way To where, he’s not mainstream I mean, I don’t know how mainstream he really is anymore Who, Joji?
Oh no, he’s mainstream now He’s like household, yeah Household name at this point For how many, Pink?
Oh yeah, true I mean, look at his charts He didn’t even top charts It’s hard for me, because I’m really into music Yeah, me too, me too That’s why, like, all these names that you’ve been pulling up I know all of them But, you know, other people It’s not the same For other people I feel like there are most people have heard of Joji without actually even Hearing any of his songs Because his, like, himself His personality People have heard about this weird artist Joji, that like Came from YouTube Yeah, like, without having even heard a song But, I wouldn’t say he’s like underground No, he’s not I think he’s pop bad at this point I mean, he’s been on a world tour He’s been to Europe, he’s been to Belgium He’s been on a world tour He’s not a normal He’s not a normal independent artist anymore Not anymore Technically he’s an independent artist now Because he’s under his own label Even though technically that’s under UMG Yeah, which is like the biggest music group ever So, it’s like You’re under your own accords But, like, with what conditions I think just like money wise And like owning your masters This probably works out for him more I feel like that’s the reason why he’s Cool with playing it safe And then just kind of doing this sound Because it’s like Business wise, I gotta make sure this is gonna work Because this is a new business So, let me put out music that I know people like And I’m not mad Oh, no, me too, it was great So, what do you rank the album?
Overall?
Yeah, like, out of ten Out of ten, I I would say nine out of ten Because Smithereens still has my heart Although, I do really like it a lot Like, it’s one that I’ve had in my rotation And, like, when it came out I was frequently listening to it Everything, but Without even, like, Thinking about it, I realized Damn, I’ve been listening to this album Non-stop for a month And I can’t stop listening to it So, it was like, yeah, I mean Yeah, I’ve literally Had in the background, playing video games, doing homework I’ve fallen asleep to it The universality of Just being able to listen to it And I don’t know what it is, it’s just one of those albums That I want to restart it when I get to the end Yeah, me too Like, when I’m like, alright, back from the top Let’s run it back one more time Like, now I know how to get the lyrics out Let me sing along It just makes me want to run it back I totally agree, like, all throughout today To prep for it, I’ve just It’s the only one I’ve had on repeat And it’s hard to, like, get tired of it, I guess Because all of them Have something different to them And it’s one of those albums, like, if somebody Told, like, when you told me, like, oh, we’re gonna do the podcast And I was like, oh, I gotta listen to it Like, I look forward to it, I’m like, heck yeah I’m gonna go play it, back to back, yeah And then, like, the people walking in the room And they’re like, well, you keep listening to the same album, like, don’t worry about it I like it Okay, so then, what would I Have made it a 10?
Like, what were you Missing that you’re like, oh, if they Would’ve done this and that, it would’ve been A 10 out of 10 for me I think because, like we said He’s different types of music I almost feel like this one left me hanging a little more Than, like, Smithereens did I know for you it was the opposite, but This one, because he kind of Pulled a little more Alternative in it, I was, recently I’ve been, like, craving alternative music So I got a little kick of that I was like, oh, yes, I want more, I want more of it But then, like, you never really got Like, he made me with Pixelated Kisses And then, that was it.
So I feel like you want him to go more Towards that rock.
I do, I really do Yeah, that rock and roll vibe, and I want him to Go more towards the rap.
Towards the rap, yeah Although, I wouldn’t be upset if he went more towards Rap, too.
Maybe he could do, like, A$AP Rocky type deal, where the album’s Just all over the place.
Just all over the place Like, he’s got some rock songs, some rap songs Some alternative songs, which I think he could pull it off.
I think he could pull that off, too Yeah, like that, yeah And I think, it also takes, like, artists A certain time to create the fanbase To where the fans are then like, oh I’m okay with you venturing into other stuff Exactly.
Because, like, I still Like your music enough.
I know you well enough To know that, like, you’re still keeping a consistent Sound, but it’s still, like, you Branching out, which is ugly.
Exactly And it’s like, I feel like right now he has Such a cult following, that he could do Anything, and they’d be like, alright, let’s try It out, let’s see.
Yeah, exactly Absolute cinema.
Exactly Yeah, like, he could do weird stuff, and I feel Like people would be like, oh, yeah, let’s get it Brand new stuff, yeah I don’t want to give it a 10 out of 10 Because I feel like he could’ve tried a little bit harder And then, now that you’re Mentioning, like, looking back on Smithereens There were some sounds that I feel like he lost, like He didn’t bring them back.
Like, Dissolve Had a certain sound that I feel like is nowhere To be found.
Anywhere.
Anywhere on Here, and then, like I don’t know, maybe Knight Rider Yeah, Knight Rider sounded so So unique And none of that was here Like, I like that one, and then Yukon Had, like, that rap style too Which he kind of brought it back a little bit Just, we need more.
Yeah, but it’s not the Same, like, nah So, I feel like he did Lose some sounds that Because he kind of cordoned himself into one Particular, like, I feel like he put himself In a box with this one.
Yeah And then he’s just stuck with it He tried to venture out a little bit, but But still within that, like, box of like Oh, this is kind of the sound that I’m going for Which, like I said, is probably like A security move style, like Like, a planned Sort of thing to maybe Like, now he has the freedom And the space to do something Wilder that he’s, like Established himself in this genre Yeah, I agree But I think that’s good I’m gonna give it 8 out of 10. 8 out of 10?
That’s good No, 9 out of 10. 9 out of 10 9 out of 10. 9 out of 10.
Cause I’ve been listening To it too much to be like, oh, this is when he doesn’t Yeah, cause, yeah The more I listen to it, the more I like it, and then Some songs actually did grow on me That I didn’t like at first, like, I didn’t like Don’t You Know I Love You At first.
Oh, that’s such a good song I don’t know why, but then I started singing it and I was like Don’t you know And I’m like, oh god, this one’s actually good And then, like, Cigarette, that one grew on me cause I thought it was boring I don’t know, maybe Forehead Touch the Ground Maybe, just need to give it a touch Yeah, I just need to give it some more time, but there was definitely Like a lot that grew on me And then ones that just right away, I was like, oh, this is a banger Like Pixelate Kisses, like right away I was like, this is so cool.
Last of Dying Greed Yeah, that one.
Instant banger And then the fast-paced ones.
I like most of the fast-paced ones That were like Like super, like And then he would just like, I don’t know, have that little Like bounce to it, like that melody Yeah, I have to do 9 out of 10. 9 out of 10 I’ve been listening to it too much.
I think it’s good that the only Points that we’re taking off of it is Because we want more of it Yeah, exactly It’s not even like that harsh of a criticism It’s more just like, okay We just want to see more of you We just want a little bit more sound Right, maybe 15 more minutes Maybe give us a whole hour-length album 3-4 more songs Yeah, give us a whole music video-length album Run-away style Literally, I think it would be good Alright, any final thoughts Before we take off?
Strain piss in the wind Is he going on tour for that?
Yeah Are you gonna try to see that?
Maybe I have a feeling like $300 tickets Or something like $500 It’s gonna be crazy.
Yeah, I don’t know if I’m ready for all that Yeah, I don’t got that I need more upbeat stuff For a concert?
