Friday Feb. 14th was opening night for our CSU Bakersfield baseball team at Hardt Field against the Washington State Cougars.

Our CSUB ‘Runners outhit the Cougars 8-4.

“We played well tonight. We did a nice job. I felt like we played well enough to win other than the timely hitting,” said head coach Jeremy Beard. “We pitch well, played good defense, we hit well, but we just didn’t get the hits when it counted to bring the guys in.”

It was a close game, with our ‘Runners leading by 1 until the 3rd inning, where the Cougars scored 2 to take the lead.

In the 4th inning, the ‘Runners were able to tie the game until the 9th inning, where the Cougars pulled ahead with 3 runs, ending the tie.

One player who stood out was freshman outfielder Jacen Roberson. Roberson was 3-for-5 with a triple, run, RBI, and a steal.

“It was exciting finally getting to step on the field and play with the brothers that I’ve been waiting to play with,” Roberson said after the game. “We had the momentum in the first inning. We lacked on timely hits, but it’s perfectly fine. We got to show tomorrow and play the best baseball we can.”

The ‘Runners weren’t able to answer the last runs made by the Washington Cougars, and lost 2-5.
