On Sunday, Sep 2 the CSU Bakersfield (2-1-0) men’s soccer team hosted UC Davis (1-0-1) at the Main Soccer Field.
After winning their first two games of the season, the Roadrunners have now dropped their last two games following their lost to UC Davis Sunday night.
CSUB looked to get onto the scoreboard first but were denied by the goal post in the early minutes of the first half.
The Auggies scored two first half goals, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
First goal came in 18 minute by Adam Mickelson who scored off a rebound.
The Second goal for the Auggies happened in the 36 minute, a cross came in from 15 yards out and passed through several CSUB defenders and banged in by Marte Formico.
The Roadrunners were outplayed throughout first half but came out looking focused and determined in the second half.
“I thought we competed, particularly in the second half. We really tried to get back into the game. 2-nil is a stretch and I think we played a really good team,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant.
The lone goal for the CSUB came from sophomore midfielder Ricardo Soza in the 87 minute, scoring his first goal of the season. Soza received a long cross from redshirt senior defender Sebastian Mentel that got past the Auggies goaltender.
“I knew he was going to go second post. I just come in and once I saw it, I hit it in one touch and went in,” Souza said on the scoring play.
“We just do that all the time in training, we get the ball out wide and our goal is to knock it back post,” Mentel said.
Next up for CSUB (2-2-0) is the first road game this season to as it heads to Corvallis, Oregon to take on Pac-12 opponent Oregon State University (1-1-1) on Friday, September 7th.
