The CSU Bakersfield men’s soccer team continued its spectacular play in the second game of the season against the University of Pacific.

After a season opener win against Bethesda University, 3-1 on Friday, Aug. 24, the Roadrunners remained perfect on the season and at home with a 3-0 win over Pacific.  

CSUB (2-0) got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute by freshman forward Francisco Gomez, his first of the year.  

“Honestly, I didn’t see it, all I thought about was that I have to score. I had to score my first of the year,” said Gomez.  

The rest of the first half saw both teams going back and forth with possession and a scoring chance by Pacific as a shot went off the right post.  

“The first goal put our game plan into effect. I would say we had the better and more clear goal scoring opportunities,” said head coach Richie Grant.  

In the second half, Pacific came out with high intensity and immediately took control of the game. With the intensity high, the Tigers and Roadrunners found themselves in foul trouble.  

Each side received three yellow cards. Andrea Charalambous of Pacific received a red card in the 84 minutes after receiving a second yellow card of the game.  

The Tigers were inches away from tying the game at one a piece in the 70 minute, but the ball hit the left post and crossbar going straight to CSUB and ending any threat for Pacific.  

CSUB responded 10 minutes later with a scoring chance and made it count with a goal by redshirt senior Sebastian Mentel, his first of the year and giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.  

The Roadrunners scored one more goal in the 88 minute with a chip in by junior forward Ryan Goldsmith, his second of the season and giving the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead.  

“Pacific is a big team, it’s a big win for us and we did exactly what we needed to do,” said redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Detre Bell on his first shutout of the season.  

CSUB continues its homestand on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. against Sacramento State. The Roadrunners will conclude their homestand on Sep. 2 against UC Davis at 7 p.m.
