Vice President Student Affairs: Anthony Briseno
Q: Tell us about you. What year are you in? What is your major? What clubs and organizations are you a part of on and off campus?
A: I am in my fourth year, going into my final year of my major, which is sociology. I am a part of numerous clubs on campus such as Delta Zeta Tau Fraternity, M.E.CH.A, Sociology Club, Students for Sustainability, Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honors Society, Cru, Kaibigan, African Student Association, Greek Council, Fraternity Council, as well. I already am a member in ASI.
Q: What are your plans for CSUB if you are elected? What changes would you like to make? How would you work to leave it better than you found it? Where do you see CSUB headed for the next year in terms of student life?
A: A few of my initiatives for next year include pursing a shared revenue program which gives student organizations additional funding opportunities, collaborating with community partners to expand student discount opportunities and securing additional grant allocations to promote further campus sustainability initiatives. I would like to address further food insecurities and create a relationship with Golden Empire Transit so that students would be able to take the bus for free to certain desired locations from Cal State, such as the mall. I will progress with programs that the current VP of UA has started, as well as further develop programs that will address and improve the students’ concerns on campus. I see the campus culture change to where many individuals will overall enjoy their university experience while attending Cal State Bakersfield.
Q: What made you take an interest in student government? Do you have any previous experience in student government? What concerns you about the CSUB student government?
A: I feel like my involvement in numerous different clubs and organizations has given me an insight to the students’ problems. I always felt that, if there is a problem, it is my responsibility to do my part and fix it instead of waiting for someone else do it. I do have experience, as I was last year the Director of Diversity Affairs. I currently don’t have any concern, but I know what I feel is important is that all students should feel as if they are being fully represented regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, major or religion during my term as VP of University Affairs.
Q: Why are you the best candidate for the job?
A: My dedication to improving the students’ experience and voice on campus has been my main focus throughout my attendance at Cal State Bakersfield. I feel like I have the best intentions for my fellow students. I have placed myself in the servitude of others as president of Greek Council and co-founded the Sustainability Club, as well as been heavily involved through numerous clubs and organizations. As the 2016-2017 Director of Diversity Affairs, I successfully advocated for more inclusive ASI positions. I also contributed to the development of a new post-consumer composting program.
Q: Do you have any talents or interesting hobbies you engage in outside of school?
A: I love to read inspiring books or those tailored to increasing my leadership skills. Aside from reading, I simply love supporting CSUB Athletics by attending games and hanging out with my fraternity brothers.
