Director of educational events: Julisa Del Toro
Q: Tell us about you. What year are you in? What is your major? What clubs and organizations are you a part of on and off campus?
A: My name is Julisa Del Toro, and I am currently a sophomore here at CSU Bakersfield. I am majoring in child development (CAFS) and minoring in criminal justice. Here on campus, I am a member of Nu Phi Chi Sorority, an ambassador for the CAMP Program and a member of Sensational Sophomores. Out in my community, I have the pleasure of being a part of the Arvin Police Department Explorer Program. I am also a bilingual educator for migrant students at Sierra Middle School.
Q: What are your plans for CSUB if you are elected? What changes would you like to make? How would you work to leave it better than you found it? Where do you see CSUB headed for the next year in terms of student life?
A: If I get elected to become your 2017-2018 Director of Educational Events, my plans are to bring more educational events on campus. I would like to bring in more diversity and to educate and increase the knowledge of the students and bring awareness on these topics. Therefore, I would like to provide the students with tools so they can be able to spread the information and educate others on campus or out in their communities. I would also like to bring motivational speakers to help motivate the students on campus. In the next few years, if more students get involved in campus, then more students would stay in school, and that would help increase the graduation rates, which is the ultimate goal of the university.
Q: What made you take an interest in student government? Do you have any previous experience in student government? What concerns you about the CSUB student government?
A: The reason why I took an interest in student government is because I am very passionate about education and in helping others by educating them. This is why I love volunteering in my community, because I get to inform my community on many topics like in immigration, health, and education. Since I do that for my community, this motivated me to become part of the student government to help promote awareness on the campus community on many different topics. Something that concerns me about the CSUB student government is that not many students run for many positions, and I feel that this is crucial because we need our voice to be heard.
Q: Why are you the best candidate for the job?
A: From my perspective, I believe I am the best candidate for the job because I have leadership skills and qualities such as determination, passionate, working well in groups, and [bing] well organized. These qualities have helped me succeed during my time here, and I know that I can put these same skills to use towards being director of educational events. I know that I can make a change on campus and I can also bring specific topics that the CSUB students would like to be educated on.
Q: Do you have any talents or interesting hobbies you engage in outside of school?
A: Outside of school, I am an Explorer for the Arvin Police Department, so I go on ride-alongs with the officers, and we patrol our city. I help the officers write citations, translate, and help the people in my community by educating them on services that would be beneficial to them and advise them on what would be best for them.
