With the 2013-2014 season already underway, the Runners look to make a name for themselves within the Western Athletic Conference as they enter the league with a win against the Redhawks on September 26, 2013 in Seattle, Washington. Prior to the Seattle victory, the ’Runners played multiple games in three different tournaments resulting in a 7-6 record. The team opened up the season with two straight wins against Charlotte and Charleston Southern in the Davidson Wildcat Classic.
“Today was a great start to our season.With everyone contributing in our well distributed offense, we are a hard team to defend,” said head coach Jolene Shepardson. The ‘Runners had an almost perfect season start, but failed to conquer the tournament with a loss to Davidson College.
Following the Davidson tournament, the Runners traveled to Harrisonburg, VA where they took on Presbyterian College, James Madison, and Wyoming. The team looked unstoppable as they won all three of their games which lead to an undefeated record in the tournament. With the momentum on their side, the ‘Runners traveled to Fresno, CA where they faced their toughest opponent yet, Oregon, in the Fresno State Classic. They ’Runners began the tournament with two straight losses to No. 20 Oregon, and their longtime rival, Fresno.
Following the loss to Fresno, the Runners concluded the Fresno State Classic on a positive note as they beat Belmont convincingly. Following the Belmont win, the Runners headed to their final tournament before the regular season, the Long Beach State Baiden Classic. CSUB suffered their first loss of the tournament to Long Beach State, but bounced back as they defeated Prairie View A&M ending the tournament with a 1-1 record.
The ’Runners faced UC Davis on Sept. 22 where they failed to be victorious before heading into WAC play. After the loss, the team bounced back with an impressive win against Seattle on Thursday, September, 26 as they opened their three game WAC road trip with a win.
As the ’Runners moved forward with WAC play, they failed to keep consistency as they added another loss to their record on Saturday, September 28th by losing to Idaho.
As a new member of the WAC, ‘the Runners look to prove that they are worthy of elite competition. With eight consecutive home games starting on Thursday, October 3rd, the ’Runners are placed in comfortable setting as they will continue to face WAC opponents.
