With less than two weeks remaining in the quarter, summer is just around the corner! Three months ready to be filled with trips to the beach or binge marathons of your favorite Netflix shows and movies. No more textbooks and essays for CSU Bakersfield students- save for those choosing to take summer school to get ahead in credits before the fall quarter of 2015.
Most students are excited for the coming break. Jill Wulf, a freshman majoring in biology, is a student who can’t wait for summer to begin.
“I’m very excited for summer,” said Wulf, “I’m going to be coaching, learning to be a referee, and playing water polo.”
However, there are some students who seem less excited, such as Lea Lavilla.
“No, I’m not excited for summer,” said Lavilla, a freshman majoring in biochemistry, “because I’ve chosen to take summer school and my dad won’t be in the country.”
“I’m taking communication 108 in summer school just to get it out of the way,” said Lavilla, “but after summer school ends, I plan to just spend my time drawing, watching anime, and binge reading manga.”
Some students, like Sara Patman, a junior majoring in biochemistry, have plans to leave the country over summer rather than taking a course or chilling in their parent’s back yard.
“Yes, I’m excited for summer because I’m going to the Dominican Republic,” said Patman, “I’m going because I want to be fluent in Spanish and I’m doing some humanitarian relief in a town called El Castillo.”
When asked what she looked forward to most about her upcoming trip, Patman exclaimed, “waterfall rappelling!”
Mnwah Mussad, a freshman majoring in liberal studies, has other plans for summer.
Aside from taking three classes during summer school, Mussad will also be fasting for thirty days during Ramadan for religious reasons.
“I start summer school the week right after finals. I’m taking physics, chemistry, and health,” said Mussad before launching into an explanation of what Ramadan is.
“For thirty days from sun up to sun down there is no eating. Ramadan is a month to teach us to be grateful for what we have and give us insight on the life of other people,” said Mussad.
There are many things to do this summer. Going to the beach is a great way to relax and keep cool in the summer heat. But if you don’t feel like driving the distance to the beach, you can still keep cool in one of the many air-conditioned movie theatres here in Bakersfield.
But if that isn’t your cup of tea, there’s nothing wrong with staying at home in your pajamas and binge watching as many television shows on Netflix as you can.
Whatever your upcoming summer plans are, whether you’re leaving the country, taking a summer class, or just having a good time with friends without the busload of work that you deal with during the months between September and June, have a good summer.
