Tell us about yourself. Include your age, major and year in school.
My name is Laura Castro, I am 21 years old and a fourth year student double majoring in Chemistry and Religious Studies.
Why are you running for this position?
I am running for Executive Vice President because I believe that we should all work to make a difference. I value education and want to do my part to provide future students with an environment that is conductive to learning and growth.
What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?
My level of passion and leadership roles centered on improving CSUB for all students and faculty is what makes me the most qualified candidate for this position.
Describe for us your platform and vision for your position.
My vision is to create a sense of community at CSUB that focuses on the continued improvements of higher education and the development of campus programs.
Last year, roughly 25% of the student body voted in the ASI election. What will you do to gather feedback and perspectives from students who don’t vote?
I believe in making time to speak to individuals on a personal level. If the individuals vote then great, but regardless, I want the student body to know that it is their voice that I want to represent.
How will you differentiate yourself from your predecessor?
I am not nearly as concerned with differentiating myself as I am with carrying forward the moment gained by past successes and bridging the gaps created by any inefficiencies or failures. Most of all, I want to look forward, build on what has worked and correct what hasn’t.
Of the student fee money that is paid to ASI, how do you think that fee money should be used?
Student fees should be used for the benefit of all students, whether that means having more available classes for students on track for graduation, or the improvement of students used facilities.
Students sometimes raise concerns about what they believe is a dead campus life. What plans do you have to help improve student life on campus?
Campus life begins by creating a community centered on the appreciation of the students that consider CSUB their home. Instead of telling students what their campus life should look like, I want to ask them what they want it to look like and then work towards that end.
During your potential time in office, you may have disagreements with some of your peers. How effectively do you feel you are at working with people who disagree with or dislike you?
All personal feelings aside; my job is to work for the students that are working hard on their education.
Why should we vote for you?
You should vote for me because I care deeply about higher education. Ultimately, I care about your voice and want to advocate on your behalf.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
The Lion King is my favorite movie because of the message it portrays: Hakuna Matata. The phrase conveys that life should have a sense of peace no matter the situation. Plus Timon and Pumba are hilarious, they bring positive vibes, and portray what true friendship should be about.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan on pursuing graduate school in the medical field. Bottom line, I want to live a life predicated on positively impacting the lives of others.
