Walking into the Student Recreation Center on a weekday morning, you may notice that there are only a handful of people getting in a hard workout. The reason for this may vary depending on the person. You may have a full schedule of classes, be occupied with work or you just can’t find enough energy to go. No matter what reason you may have, it’s understandable if you don’t have time or the motivation to take advantage of the various workout opportunities that are at the SRC.
Among the things you may have neglected to take part in are the Group X classes that usually occur during different hours everyday, each week. They vary from easy-going yoga happening as early as 6am to sweat-drenching Zumba as late as 6:30pm. Whichever intensity or difficulty you may be going for, it is certain that you will get quite a workout.
The SRC also provides students access to a climbable rock wall to those who are brave enough to tough the enormous height. They also have motion video game consoles such as the Xbox Kinect, Nintendo Wii, and exercise DVDs as an alternate medium to get people moving. Access to sports equipment appeal to the sport’s oriented crowd that are looking to get their blood pumping.
Vincent Ortiz, a Senior criminal justice major, frequents the gym a few times a week. He visits the yoga and latin dance classes when he has time. He offers advice to those who have not yet visited the gym. “Don’t be afraid,” said Ortiz. “Climb the rock wall. That will get rid of any fear you may have in going to the gym.”
As for Raj Rai, a freshman PEAK major, he comes to the SRC almost all week for at least one hour each visit. He’s familiar with the many activities that the facility provides and he encourages others to take part in them as well. “There are classes that are free; they’re paid for in your tuition. There’s fitness classes [and] weight training classes that you can take,” said Raj. “There are even trainers, and, although they may have full schedules by now, they sometimes have some free time to squeeze you in.”
Although some people may not be too excited to build up an odor and sweat profusely at the gym, you have to admit that there is something satisfying in knowing that you are taking the right steps toward your fitness and overall health. Attend a class, go solo by exercising on some of the numerous exercise machines that are spread throughout the two-story facility, run with a friend on the track, or jump into a game of basketball on the court with a few others. Make sure to visit the SRC and explore what you can do to get in shape.
SRC hours are Mon-Fri. (6am-11pm), Sat. (10am-6pm) and Sun. (6pm-11pm). For more information about the Group X schedule for the Fall, check the flyers inside the SRC.
