For the first time in Cal State Bakersfield Spring Commencement history, the ceremony was held at Dignity Health Arena, Theater and Convention Center. The first ceremony started at 8:30 a.m., as family, friends, staff, faculty, and loved ones were energized and excited to celebrate this huge milestone.
Once the ceremony started, the crowd radiated joyful energy and enthusiasm. As each graduate’s name was called to receive their diploma, family, friends, and loved ones shouted, screamed, cried, and cheered. That energy encouraged some graduates to wave, blow kisses, or appreciate the audience on their way back to their seats.
After every graduate received their diploma, President Harper gave his final remarks, “Graduates, turn your tassels… Congratulations!” Confetti burst from the ceiling, signaling the end of commencement. The celebration continued outside as families exited the arena, found their graduates, and shared huge congratulations.
Each graduate had their own unique journey at CSUB.
Cesar Adolfo Arroyo Castaneda began his journey at CSUB in 2020. Despite Covid-19 and other challenges, he earned his bachelor’s in 2024 and received his Master of Public Administration in 2026. “I love CSUB, it’s been worth it man, representing my family, my culture… It’s a beautiful blessing.”
Samuel Toro Jr. also started at CSUB in 2020. After switching majors, he committed and earned his Masters of History. “It was a lot of hard work and late nights, but I’m happy to celebrate with my friends.”
Jessica Jimenez, Bachelors in Human Resource Management, was deeply involved on campus. She loved being part of the dance team and SHERM Club and was even nominated for Homecoming Queen. “I don’t want to leave school, but you have to leave the nest eventually, right?”
Now that graduation has come, a new journey begins. Some graduates are stepping straight into their fields, such as Cesar working in operations and facilities at Target. Others are job searching, like Samuel in the history field. Some may take a gap year to explore opportunities, just like Jessica.
Graduating from CSUB is proof of resilience, courage, and determination. For the graduates, take those strengths out into the world.
