Cal State Bakersfield’s new Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Deborah Thien has officially stepped into her role, bringing nearly two decades of experience in the Cal State University System with commitments of shared governance, collaboration and academic excellence.
Thien oversees CSUB’s largest entity, Academic Affairs, which includes faculty matters, student success strategies and academic programs.
Previously, Thien served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Cal State Long Beach where she oversaw 27 departments, which is roughly the size of CSUB.
According to Thien, understanding how CSUB functions academically and culturally is essential. Her approach so far has consisted of listening and observing university operations while committing to creative and optimistic work.
As Chief Academic Officer, Thien highlights her commitment to enhancing the quality and impact of the university’s academic programs and degrees, with the goal of better serving both students and the broader community.
Thien was selected after an extensive national search process by a 10 member committee led by Dr. Aaron Hedge, the Academic Senate Chair. Hedge emphasized her experience, leadership and collaborative nature.
CSUB President Vernon Harper praised Thien’s appointment, noting her academic background and alignment with the university’s mission.
“Provost Thien brings decades of excellence as a scholar, researcher and educator to CSUB, and we are so honored to have her here in the Roadrunner family,” wrote Harper in a statement.
“As a first-generation college student, Dr. Thien understands the challenges many of our own students face in navigating a university education. She also will preside over this university’s continuing mission to offer the best university education possible to the families of Kern County and the Antelope Valley,” wrote Harper.
Associated Student Inc. President, Anthonio Reyes, spoke highly of Thien’s early leadership and awareness of the campus community and culture.
“I’m truly honored to be given the privilege of this role. It’s a remarkable community. I am so happy that the campus chose me for this role, and I am one hundred and ten percent committed to delivering on that good faith,” said Thien.
Thien will continue meeting with campus deans, faculty and students throughout the year as she shapes her vision for CSUB’s academic future.
