Marvel’s Thunderbolts (2025) is among the latest installment of superhero films for this year. Essentially the film had all the right elements that could have created a new and unique story but ultimately fell a bit short. Though, visually this movie had a lot to offer, it was often a mix of confusing and awkward acting.
The three biggest stars from this film included Sebastian Stan as “Bucky Barnes,” Florence Pugh as “Yelena Belova” and David Harbour as “ Red Guardian.” Each of these characters did have some redeeming qualities amidst all of the action within the film itself. Stan and Pugh especially had one of the best dynamics throughout the movie. They provided a comic relief on the screen despite being in conflict with each other during every interaction.
The film follows the story of the new Super villain antagonist, “Sentry,” who is played by Lewis Pullman. The plot is how well this new team of heroes deal with the threat of an unstable superhuman who is a potential threat to the world. The team is a mix of Superheros that are essentially unaccepted in the world among other Superhero teams like “The Avengers” which is constantly mentioned throughout this movie. They form the group “ Thunderbolts” while being forced to work with each other, learning about one another’s trauma which leaves you feeling like you are watching a therapy session at some points.
The film focuses on its themes of past emotional and physical trauma and redemption. Surprisingly this movie even tackles elements of government manipulation and exploitation. Despite all of these qualities which could have been explored better, the film tries to make the often unfunny dialogue connect with the audience. Overall I believe this could have been something new and interesting but it just felt kind of meh. It was not terrible but will make you question if the next Marvel Superhero Movie is even worth the watch.
