At Cal State Bakersfield the California Faculty Association Members hosted a rally on March 24 in response to course and budget cuts happening throughout campus.
Students and faculty gathered in front of the Student Union to bring awareness to the ongoing potential issues around campus such as delayed graduation, larger class sizes, overworked professors, and the removal of professors from enrollment schedules.
Dr. Tracey Salisbury, department chair of Ethnic Studies and CFA Chapter President for the campus and Dirk Horn, senior lecturer in the department of Political Science led the event.
“We are not going to be silenced here at CSUB, … be kind but be tough,” said Salisbury.
Horn demands advocacy for less instructional cuts, more access to classes for students and more administrative cuts if they need to be cut. He emphasizes the need for students to come support faculty members that are trying to preserve access to education.
Students also attended the rally sharing concerns about how these cuts are affecting not only their education but their future. Urging the administration to prioritize their students success while addressing the mishandling of funds that can negatively impact the future of the campus
“You say you prioritize your students but show it with your actions,” said Minaya Valentine, a junior studying Environmental research management.
The Students for Quality Education made continuous efforts at the rally encouraging students to be more vocally involved.
The rally grew loud with CFA leading chants such as, “Hey hey ho ho… where did all the money go?,” “Tuition hikes have got to go,” and “No cuts, no fees, no corporate university.”
Following the rally some members of CFA, SQE and the campus community attended the spring budget forum.
