The California State University Board of Trustees hosted an open forum on April 23, allowing students, staff, faculty, and the community to comment on what they would want to see in the next California State University, Bakersfield president.
The presidential search process consists of two committees, the presidential search committee, and an advisory committee.
The presidential search committee consists of several CSU Board of Trustees members, including CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia. The advisory committee consists of representatives from students, alumni, faculty, staff and a member of a campus advisory board. Both committees work together in the search of the next CSUB president. A complete list of the committee members can be found here.
The committees will review and interview candidates over the next few months and CSUB’s next president will be announced in September during the Board of Trustees meeting.
“It’s very important to hear from the community what Cal State Bakersfield is looking for in that next leader,” said Garcia.
During the open forum members of the CSUB community shared what they are looking for in the next president including in areas such as background, involvement and goals for the university. Community members shared that they want a president who prioritizes inclusivity and helps all students feel like they belong at CSUB.
“As of yesterday, I had a student in my office that said they wanted to transfer out of this university because she did not feel like she belonged in this campus,” said Tamar Anthony, Co-Chair of CSUB’s Black Faculty and Staff Association.
Others also commented on how they feel CSUB is not inclusive enough and they want a president who will promote inclusivity and diversity on campus, not just for students but also for staff and faculty. Speakers asked for a president who supports Black students on campus and prioritizes Black students’ success.
Speakers also shared that they want a president who is involved on campus, accessible, and makes students feel a sense of belonging. They want someone who wants to collaborate with local community members, like local Native and Indigenous tribes.
Overall speakers hope that the next CSUB president is willing to follow through on their promises and is committed to being a part of the community.
“I believe in our students… and more than that my colleagues. They are the best, we are the best and we deserve the best, and I hope that as you search you will get CSUB the next best president,” said Natasha Harris, Director of Special Programs and Student Retention Initiatives.
