The CSUB student health center brought farm animals and educational activities for the 24th annual OcSOBER fest on Oct. 18-19. The CSUB health center finds ways to spread alcohol awareness every third week in October as campuses across the nation are celebrating National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
“We teach them [the students] standard drink sizes, we teach them the signs of alcohol poisoning, and we teach them about the dangers of fentanyl, and educating them on narcan… we just touch on a lot of different topics relating to alcohol and resources on campus,” said Lauren Hedlund Student Health Services’ Health Educator.
Lauren explained how the health center invites different departments out and encourages them to have interactive games for the students to enjoy. This year, the Health Center brought the BFF mobile petting zoo to make it feel like a fall festival.
“It’s nice to have all the departments out partnering because they bring a lot of information and we can reach a large group of students all at once working together.” Said Lauren.
Some departments that participated were the SRC, Students with Disabilities, the Equity, inclusivity, and Compliance Department, and the Dean of Students.
Campus dining also attended and served mocktails for students to enjoy, and promote that you can still have fun while sober.
The CSUB police department was present and shared information regarding the CSUB police services.
Sargent Draucker encouraged students to try on beer goggles to raise awareness on why you shouldn’t drink and drive.
“It taught me that if I ever need help that there is someone there,” said Lizbeth Gomez, a junior majoring in business administration and human resources, after trying out the beer goggles.
The police department also made students aware that they are available 24/7, 365 to ensure the safety of students on campus. They informed students that they can assist with walking across campus late at night, jump– starting cars, or use one of the emergency poles at various locations across campus for further assistance.
From the police department, counseling center, and health center, CSUB departments made sure students were aware of various topics regarding alcohol safety. They encouraged students to gain more information in a fun and encouraging way.
