President of Japan and Beyond, Christina Swanson, a 21-year-old Chemistry major, and Treasurer Stephanie Villacorta, a 20-year-old biology major, were present at the Associated Students Inc. meeting to ask for 1,055.99 to fund the spring Matsuri event. The amount funded by ASI was increased to an estimated $1,460. ASI allocated the extra money: $200 to performer and honorarium fees, $200 to supplies and services and lastly $4.01 to promotion and publicity.
After adjusting the amount as stated the board passed the bill and ASI will co-sponsor the event.
The last Matsuri event on campus was in 2010, with nearly 500 attendees. The previous event featured the club members singing, dancing and preparing Japanese food made by the club.
This spring’s Matsuri will feature taiko drummers, an Aikido display, dance and skits, with food catered from a local restaurant. Anime screenings, stations with activities such as origami, judo club, calligraphy and much more. Campus Gamers will also provide Japanese games for students to play like Dance Dance Revolution as well as board games.
ASI meets every Friday at 3:15 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room in the Student Union.
Japan and Beyond’s Matsuri event is scheduled for May 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.
