It might typically be uncommon to walk onto campus and run into Spiderman, Captain America, or any other comic book character. But that was not the case on Saturday, Oct. 6 as CSUB hosted it’s second annual Rowdy Con.
Rowdy Con is CSUB’s own take on the much larger event Comic Con. The convention offered all sorts of entertainment for the gaming community as well as the comic community.
Most responsible for the event was the head of Student Organizations and coordinator, Edward Webb. When speaking about Rowdy Con, Webb said, “I’m really happy to be able to give you guys some fresh content. We really wanted to make sure there was something for everyone and I hope everyone had a great time.”
Webb’s intent at providing something for everyone was definitely fulfilled as Rowdy Con 2018 offered entertainment and enjoyment for different ages and preferences. One of the major new events was an escape room where attendees were able to simulate different scenarios. Outside, there was also a set up for Nerf Wars, which Webb states took some time to be approved but ended up being worth the wait.
For younger crowds, and older people who were interested, the grass area outside of the Student Union was transformed into a bouncy house wonderland. The Student Union even transformed one of their rooms into a children’s room that included arts and crafts activities as well as a gaming station for the kids present at the event.
The Student Union was converted into a virtual heaven with gaming stations set up throughout the halls and in the conference rooms. Players were able to showcase their skills on a variety of game consoles; the options to choose from included modern game systems, to more nostalgic game systems like the Nintendo 64.
One of the major events of the day was a Cosplay competition that was hosted in the Student Recreation Center. The Cosplay competition attracted people from different cities.
Amanda Kay traveled to the campus along with one of the judges from the competition. “We come all the way from Orange County. My friend is one of the judges, she cosplays, and she has a huge Instagram following.”
The cosplay competition included beginner cosplayers as well as more experienced cosplayers. There were people dressed as superheroes as well as those who dressed like their favorite anime characters. The competition included competitors of all ages. The event was followed by a movie showing of the animated film “Incredibles 2.”
Overall, CSUB’s Rowdy Con was a fun-filled event which not only allowed the community to participate in exciting activities, it also contributed to a good cause. “Every penny that we make from admissions and ticket drawings from this event goes to the Children’s Hospital in Bakersfield. Since 2012 we’ve raised $140,000 for the Children’s Hospital,” said Webb.
