Students witnessed smoke and what appeared to be flames roaring across the street of Stockdale Highway on Monday night.
The flames seemed to be coming from the dry Kern River bank near the bike path. Bakersfield Fire Department was on scene and had the fire completely put out before the end of the night.
BFD Public Information Officer John Frando said that they were alerted to the fire in the early evening. The fire seemed to have started in the Kern River bank near Coffee Road and made its way to Stockdale Highway near the north side of campus.
Frando said that there was no evidence of a malfunction or accelerant that would have caused a fire in the area so the most likely cause is a man-made fire. The fire may have gotten out of control due to negligence or even intentionally, but BFD is still investigating and have not yet confirmed what caused those flames to burn so wildly.
