Did you know there’s a Bike to School Day? Did you know that May is National Bike Month?
The Student Recreation Center held a Bike to School event next to Dorothy Donahoe Hall on the red brick road on May 9th.
“Today is Bike to School Day and the 18th is the Bike to Work Day,” said Tony Renteria, bike share program manager at the student recreation center. “My goal is to help create sustainability here at CSUB and make the campus green and eco friendly.”
Students were encouraged to stop by the booth and learn about bike safety and tips. The SRC had set up snack, water, stickers, and other freebies that students could take. The goal was to get students on their bikes.
“Students don’t know about all the biking opportunities on campus,” said Josh Coy, a senior in sociology. Coy is also the student manager for the bike share program and outdoor adventure. “Only 10 percent of the students use the program. I try and tell everyone I can about it.”
The bike share program is available to all CSUB students. After presenting a valid CSUB ID, bikes are available to rent for free for a day. Locks, helmets, and lights are included.
“We wanted to provide students with another means of transportation,” said Renteria. “We’re hoping the bike share program can help alleviate some of the parking problems on campus. We’re hoping to create sustainability practices here on campus.”
“It’s really easy to go green and riding your bike helps,” said Stephanie Magana a junior in computer engineering. Magana works for the sustainability department on campus. “We help promote and provide the campus with sustainability. People don’t know how easy it is. It can be as simple as riding your bike to school, using a reusable coffee cup, or water bottle.”
The SRC also provides classes on bike maintenance, and repair. They also sell spare bike tubes and other small equipment. Their clinics and Tech Tuesday’s are free to attend.
“I went to a bike clinic with a friend and my bike was chosen and they worked on it,” said Maranda Maliska, a freshman in engineering sciences. “I’ve been using the bike share program and it’s been fun meeting new people through the runner ride program.”
