Students who are looking for ways to de-stress during finals need look no further than the Student Recreation Center. Besides the tried-and-true stress relieving workout opportunities, the SRC also offers many wellness activities throughout the semester.
This semester’s Zen Zone event, featuring mindfulness meditation, small study groups, aromatherapy and more, will be Thurs., May 10 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Leah Bank said the different events throughout the day would include “coloring books, games, aromatherapy, (and) Yoga with Yani from 5:30-6:30 p.m., which is our normally scheduled yoga class.”
The event takes place in the Solario room, but students and faculty are encouraged to also use the other amenities at the SRC.
“Our aim is to target students who are looking for another space to relax,” said Bank. “Another way to de-stress is to get moving, so while you’re in the building, feel free to take a break and walk around the track or take a group fitness class.”
Bank pointed out that exercise is a great stress reliever, even if it’s “just checking out a basketball and going in the gym for 10 minutes.”
Group sports such as shooting some hoops with friends, is the biggest attraction at the SRC for Alfredo Zavala, a senior computer information systems student. He said he would be interested in “maybe just small study groups or group sports.”
Eric Lord from the counseling center will open the event with mindfulness meditation at 10:30 a.m.
Bank said this activity was popular in the past, and the goal is “to calm participants, and get them to focus on studying and relaxation techniques. We’ll also have coffee and tea available throughout the day.”
The SRC strives to keep students focused on self-care throughout the semester. Events include Sleep Well Dream Well, a nutrition fair, and an essential oils workshop.
“We have wellness workshops four or five times a semester,” said Bank, “to kind of focus on what student wellness and well-being means.”
Ashley Martinez, a senior in criminal justice said she was open to learning more about SRC activities.
“I’m not really into yoga, but I do like the other classes,” said Martinez. “I’d be interested in learning more about aromatherapy.”
Bank said the SRC has a lot to offer students this Spring. Besides the fitness workshops and activities, the SRC offers small group training and personal training as well.
