CSU Bakersfield men’s and women’s track and field finished up their two-day event at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, California. The team had successful individual results from both the men and women’s side.
On the men’s side, sophomore decathlon athlete Nick Zandes finished first overall in the decathlon. Zandes finished with 6,794 total points to give him a first place. He had several top-five finishes or better in several events including the long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters, 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
In the men’s 800, sophomore Curtis Threlkeld finished in fifth place with a time of 1:52.88.
Senior Alec Benavides finished fourth place in the men’s javelin throw. On his fourth throw of the day, Benavides threw his best. His best throw was 184.9 ft.
In the 400 hurdles, junior Gabriel Gaeta finished with a time of 54.74 and give him an eighth place finished in the event.
Freshman Corbin Chronister competed in the men’s hammer throw and shot put. In the hammer throw, Chronister finished in eighth place with a throw of 174.3 ft. While, in the shot put, he finished in ninth place, having several throws of 48.43 ft.
Junior Tim Van Horn finished seventh in the men’s high jump. He cleared 6-4.75 on his third attempt. Van Horn tried clearing 2.00 m but couldn’t complete the jump in his three attempts.
On the women’s side, sophomore Falon Wilson finished first in her section and placed fourth overall in the women’s 100 hurdles. Wilson’s time was 14.18.
Overall as a team, the men’s side finished in fifth place with a total of 32 points overall. While, the women’s side finished in ninth place with a total of six points.
Up next for the CSUB track and field team is a two-day invitational in San Luis Obispo next weekend, March 23-34. Following the Cal Poly invitational in San Luis Obispo, the team travels to UCLA for the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and Jim Bush Legends Invitational March 30-31.
