The CSU Bakersfield Student Recreation Center hosted its second annual Rec Fest on Monday, where the center welcomed students to bring awareness of the services it has to offer.

The SRC’s Student Manager for Marketing Nico Salum explained how the Rec Fest aims to help retain students on campus.

“It is an open house to showcase the programs and services that the Rec Center provides for the students,” said Salum. “The big picture is to help with the retention of students on campus whether they are commuters or not.”

The Rec Fest event brought students to the SRC to experience the second annual event as it continues to grow.

“I liked the activities in [the Solario Room,] they are nicer,” said CSUB nursing major Lisa Patton.

Patton really enjoyed the event activities and felt that the SRC appropriately displayed what it has to offer.

“It’s a good way to let students see the services they offer and it makes you want to come back to the gym,” said Patton.

However, Patton also expressed disappointment for the turnout of the event.

“There isn’t people here, and they could have advertised it more, but it’s hard because it is only the first day of school,” she said.

Other students had similar impressions of this year’s Rec Fest.

“It makes you want to stay when you see the equipment there is and how new the gym is,” said sophomore liberal studies major Jose Acosta. “I did not come last year, but I came just to see what the Rec Center provides for you.”

The Rec Fest was full of activities for students to partake in, such as volleyball, basketball, cornhole and contests where students could win different prizes.

Students enjoyed food and refreshments, including pizza and water.

According to Salum, the event took all summer to plan, and it involved participation from the entire SRC team in order to be prepared for today.
