Last week, I decided to try Zumba and indoor cycling which are offered at the Student Recreation Center. I’m also enrolled in yoga as a credit/no credit class.
I personally enjoyed these classes, and anyone can do them regardless of physical fitness.
Let’s start by saying that I lack athleticism. I recently started jogging, but I have not followed a constant exercise routine probably since I was 14, which was six years ago.
The first day of yoga, I was excited. I thought I was flexible because I’m double-jointed, but it turns out not in every joint. Besides, I was missing probably the most important part of yoga which is meditation. This class is incredibly relaxing not just physically but mentally.
The next class I tried was Zumba. I had done Zumba following YouTube videos in the comfort of my living room. Zumba at the SRC was very different though. The Sequoia room where the class is held has a mirror wall that allows you to enjoy the view of your dance moves. Sadly, I realized that I should never be in ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ The view of me trying to follow the class was comical and cringeworthy at the same time. Either I was moving my arms but not my legs or my legs but not my arms, and my hips were barely moving. I’m definitely not a dancer.
The last class I went to was indoor cycling. This is the only exercise I had previously done with an instructor in an actual gym. I knew what to expect even the uncomfortable bicycle seats. However, these seats have been the worst. They were so bad, I was desperate for the part where you add resistance and pedal standing up because the feeling of my thighs burning was better than feeling my lower pelvic bone being crushed by a seat.
I recommend students try the Group X fitness classes. All instructors are welcoming. They ask if anyone is there for the first time and give you a quick introduction to the class. You can go at your pace so don’t feel like you have to keep up with the SRC trainer.
If you want to relax and increase your flexibility, yoga is the place to go. It’s offered as a credit/no credit class, but even if you’re not enrolled you’re welcomed. If you want something fun, Zumba it is. But if you want a workout that will really get you sweating, cycling is your option. Hopefully, the bike’s seats are not too uncomfortable for you.
But seriously, you should take advantage of the SRC and the classes they offer since the fees are already included in your tuition.
