Graduation last June was brutal for me. My grandmother was in the crowd and I felt horrible that the person who funded my education was left to stand in the blistering heat just to catch a glimpse of my walk across the stage while ALL of the faculty were allowed to sit under the shade of the out door stage. My classmates and I commented that WE should be the ones under the shade and the faculty should have been left out in the heat. We are the ones honored on that special day, why must we suffer through it? And another thing, why are the families held back by the police from snapping pictures of their grads??! This was a deplorable behavior I witnesses on my graduation day which really ticked me off as well as the family members who wanted once in a lifetime photos.

Good review. One issue with e-books - related only to price is that they have no resell value (that is one reason publishers while initially reluctant to go this route are now very eager about this market). Regarding the book you mentioned “Fundamentals of Statistics” - it was just released as a new 4th edition. Its list price is $142 and can be bough used for $72 or rented for $38: see prices 9780321838704 The prices for the 3rd edition as a result have gone down to ranges that you mentioned, and for many classes the older edition will do just fine (just make sure to ask your professor): older edition (9780321641878) prices -Ofer The Cheap Textbook

Great article! I have long thought textbooks were a scam. I would like to add that in many cases, professors do not need to assign the latest edition of a text. They could help students by accommodating their syllabus to earlier version; research does not move so fast that we need new editions each year. Students should ask their professors whether they could use an earlier edition of a text.

It seems to me that you and yours need to do a version of the Harlem Shake. What you propose as a result of ‘absentmindedness’ actually is a collaborative effort of a group of friends (sometimes strangers) to have a bit of fun. Now I want you to back off from the realm of judgement and criticism and try to understand “WHY” such an insane mockery of the Harlem Shake went viral across the Nation. People enjoy a break from the norm. A chance to derail the ordinary enough so that they can keep going with their overwhelming responsibilities. Its a more effective version of ‘casual friday’ and its resonance will be the topic of many conversations, thus bringing life to an otherwise boring workday. From what I can tell it seems there is bit of competition at who can be the most crazy / random, which likely is the reason why the newer ones are much less appropriate than the original.
Now Ashley… you seem mad, possibly uptight, and upset at being so. So much that you write an article that brings down people who are trying to have a little fun which goes against what you see as an appropriate means. You go to a Commuter School and look down hawk nosed at the lesser Americans who group together in a get-together for a bit of dumb fun. Which is not the best thing for a journalist to do, and brings me to my first sentence in saying that you should try it with you and your office. It will be stupid, embarrassing, possibly a failure, but in the end I promise you will have a good time hanging out with your friends / classmates / co-workers in a much more comfortable setting then the office. It will make them more like family, and all around more comfortable to be around. Try it! and don’t forget to youtube it!

Typical response from those who are not catholic with a misunderstanding of our religion. We do not worship the pope nor do we worship saints. If you listen to just people who are ill informed then you too would have that skewed opinion. Do your research, talk to a Catholic Priest, attend their bible studies and conferences then you will know extactly the answer you are asking. The Papacy to catholic’s is has a big role in our religion he is our Shepherd guiding his flock towards the word of God. The Papacy is the rock and the successor to Saint Peter. The Papacy is the diplomat to all leaders for Catholics around the world. I can keep going but like I stated earlier you question because you do not know. Seek the answers you seek to your questions to those with the authority and established knowledge of his role. I doubt you would trust any comment I give you here. I dare not answer your question if the Papacy was abolished. The Papacy is a key componet for Catholics reaching God’s wisdom. Granted you may study and reach that wisdom on your own but to reach that you must question all those with knowledge of his glory and even then you may not reach what you are looking for. That is why it is called Faith.
