Summer has come and gone. Keep up your energy by taking a Group X class at the Student Recreation Center.
If you hate traditional exercises, hate running on the treadmill or even hate lifting weights, try a fun exercise class at the SRC. Since its opening in 2009, the SRC has been a welcoming place for students, faculty and alumni to work out.
Dave Hart, the Fitness and operation coordinator at the SRC, would like people to know that anyone can take a class.
“You don’t have to be in great shape, or an athlete to take any of the classes; they are a lot of fun,” Hart said.
The SRC includes over 60 machines, 10 exercise classes, an indoor track and a rock wall.
The Group X classes start from six in the morning until seven at night and are from Monday through Thursday. There is a great variety of classes offered at the SRC. They include: Abs, Butts and Guts, Core Fusion, Flow Yoga, Hip Hop Aerobics, Indoor Cycling, Latin Dance, Modern Ballet, Restorative Yoga, Spin and Sculpt, Sunrise Yoga, Yoga and Zumba.
Every class is for both female and males, and they are free. Senior art major, Mariah Sherman-Graham teaches Hip Hop Aerobics and Core Fusion Yoga at the SRC.
“My favorite thing about teaching is you get paid to workout and have a good time; what’s not fun about that,” Graham said.
Graham’s Hip Hop Aerobics class is a high energy class that focuses on learning hip hop dance moves, while Core Fusion Yoga class is a yoga inspired class that focuses on abdominal and the lower back.
Mo Bilyk, a double major in Kinesiology and biology, states that the most popular class is butts and guts. This class focuses on the abdominals and gluteus. One class that Hart would like to add in the future is a Pilates
class. One of the most interesting classes the SRC has ever had was a ballroom dance class.
“We had a ballroom dance class when we first opened and that was very popular. President Mitchell even came in and took a class with his wife,” said Hart.
