While many CSUB students were enjoying their final days of summer, the athletes of the ’Runner athletics department were hard at work making a name for a university looking to prove itself in conference play.
From September 6 to 8, the CSUB men’s soccer team was busy at work winning the Copa de Causeway Tournament by defeating the Aggies of UC Davis 2-0 on their own field. The ’Runners won their first match against Sacramento State by a score of 3-0 in Sacramento as well.
Sophomore midfielder Eduardo Caldaza cracked open the game when he received a pass from junior midfielder Lucas Dall’Orso in the 37th minute. He scored once more in the 52nd minute to put the ’Runners ahead another goal to seal the game shut.
Since 2010, the ’Runners and the Aggies were deadlocked in an offensive standstill. For two seasons, neither team scored a goal against each other until the day of their match on Sept. 8.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Anthony Perez blocked all six of the Aggies’ shots on goal.
“It’s fantastic to get two road wins and earn a tournament championship with this young team,” Head Coach Simon Tobin told gorunners.com. “We played some excellent attacking soccer and kept another clean sheet.”
Caldaza wasn’t the only ‘Runner to make a good impression on the tournament competitors. Caldaza, junior midfielder Joe Masumiya and sophomore midfielder Dante Nino were named to the All-Tournament team.
The ’Runners look to continue their season against the UC Riverside Highlanders at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Main Soccer Field at CSUB. Students get free entrance with their IDs.
Also that night, the second annual Rowdy Run will take place during half-time. This is a chance for students to show their ’Runner spirit.
